Fall risk and nutrional status. What
is the link? It’s pretty simple when you think about it. Poor nutrition leads to muscle and
weight loss. Gormish Chiropractic & Rehabilitation carefully assesses our
older Carrolltown chiropractic patients at risk for falls, paying
special attention to their nutritional status. Gormish Chiropractic & Rehabilitation cares about fall prevention!
NUTRITIONAL STATUS BEFORE FALLS
Researchers attempted to describe
the relationship between nutritional status and body mass
index (BMI) and fall risk and recurrent fall risk in older adults
who live in community settings. They found that
malnourished patients and those at risk for malnourishment maintained
a 45% higher risk of having at least one fall. (1)
Verifying BMI and nutritional status is pretty
easy to do. Gormish Chiropractic & Rehabilitation does it to protect
our Carrolltown chiropractic patients!
Carrolltown FALL RISK AND MALNUTRITION
Fall risk assessments have often disregarded
nutritional status instead focusing on issues like balance
and fall risk-increasing drugs.
Nutritional status is influential,
too. Malnutrition leads to weight loss which prompts
muscle weakness which leads to an increase in fall risk. It’s truly
a domino effect! A recent study reported
that malnutrition was significantly associated with high fall risk
according to a few prominent fall risk assessment
tools (particularly the Johns Hopkins fall risk assessment
tool). (2) Preventing falls is optimal. Recovering from falls is important.
NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND RECOVERY AFTER FALLS
Poor nutritional status in older adults especially those who have a history of falling puts them at risk of inferior recovery from a fall.
Nearly a third of community-dwelling adults with a history
of falling were either currently malnourished or at risk of
malnourishment. Improving the nutritional status of those who have fallen enhanced their physical
performance. (3) Gormish Chiropractic & Rehabilitation knows nutrition and is ready
to help our at-risk patients enrich theirs!
